More About

Today is Celebrate Israel Day, which starts with a run in Central Park, followed by a day of festivities including a full-blown parade at 11 and live Israeli music throughout the day. Sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council, the four-mile run is a symbolic journey through Israel, from Eilat to Tel Aviv. The event started in 1964 when marchers walked down Riverside Drive in support of the young State of Israel. (That year, Israel was involved in disputes with Syria and the Palestinians, both of which led to warfare over the winter.) This year, more than 5,000 runners have registered, and more than 30,000 will march in the parade. At 8 a.m., the race starts at the East Drive just below 68th Street.
