More About

Gothic, pastoral, baroque, homespun, and ineluctably weird, the National Theater of the Unites States of America never opts for just one mode when it can jumble half a dozen together. Having already explored game shows, lecture circuits, self-help seminars, and French classicism, NTUSA’s latest stylistic amalgam, The Golden Veil, takes a backwoods approach to a revenge story, scripted by Normandy Sherwood, directed by James Stanley, and with a four-person cast led by Jesse Hawley. A sinister tale of a young woman seduced and abandoned, this play with music combines ballet, jamboree, puppets, séances, hootenannies, and “an exposé of the lives of the rural poor and a celebration of their lovely handicrafts.”
