The South African producer-bandleader has evolved from intriguing M.I.A.-inspired rapper to experimental rap-rocker. In between his 2009 debut, Mshini Wam, and his terrific recent Father Creeper, Mathambo picked up a scruffy quartet that bashes, blows, and bleeps with the loose-limbed counter-virtuosity of shambolic afrobeat. What on record sounds seriously sculpted comes off onstage as good sloppy fun. With Pegasus Warning.
