The Merry Wives of Windsoris William Shakespeare’s sole comedy set in England from start to finish. Director Hamilton Clancy is so singularly unimpressed by this fact that he has relocated the action closer to home. Much closer. In fact, to the very Lower East Side blocks that bound his particular playing area, the Municipal Parking Lot at the corner of Broome and Ludlow. Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot, which has revved audience engines for more than a decade, retitles this Falstaffian lark The Merry Wives of Windsor Towers and situates it among the contentious citizen-action groups, real estate moguls, and community boards that oversee LES development, rendering this comedy rather more cutthroat than usual. And if that weren’t ruthless enough, the season concludes with a new version of Coriolanus on August 2.
