More About

In the late ’60s and early ’70s, publishers of pornography in New York teamed up with highbrow artists and writers to dodge the censors. The result: a range of tabloids and magazines featuring the scandalous work of well-known artists such as Andy Warhol, Dan Graham, John Chamberlain, Carolee Schneemann, Yoko Ono, and John Lennon. Screw You, a new exhibit at Susan Inglett Gallery, is a fond look back on those unique collaborations. Curated by David Platzker, a dealer of rare ephemera, the show takes its name from the magazine that started it all—porn king Al Goldstein’s tabloid Screw: The Sex Review—and includes publications such as the New York Review of Sex and Politics and Kusama Presents an Orgy, a soft-core porn and art periodical edited by the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. And speaking of Kusama, her sure-to-be-zany retrospective at the Whitney (945 Madison Avenue, 212-570-3600) opens July 12.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m. Starts: June 1. Continues through July 27, 2012
