More About

As you might have heard, a “leap second” was added to June 30 to make up for the Earth’s slowing rotation speed. Seems like a simple enough solution. But what would we do if Earth slowed even more? That’s the question first-time author Karen Thompson Walker explores in her fantastical novel The Age of Miracles. Told from the perspective of an 11-year-old girl in Southern California, the story imagines a world where Earth slows so much that days are endlessly dark, nights are sunny, and a new society is formed of people who no longer obey “clock time.” The book, which sold to Random House for a reported $1 million, has been picking up kind reviews, including one from New York Times’ critic Michiko Kakutani, who called it a “genuinely moving tale that mixes the real and the surreal, the ordinary and the extraordinary with impressive fluency and flair.” Tonight, catch the Brooklyn-based author at PowerHouse Arena for a reading and discussion with One Story editor Hannah Tinti.
