In the mid-to-late '90s, few bands typified the evolving emo genre quite like Braid: With plaintively sung and outright screamed vocals and crisp guitar work, albums like their 1998 classic Frame and Canvas seemed like a progression from the puffed-chest caterwauls of hardcore. When the band broke up initially in 1999, some members went on to play in Hey Mercedes and others in the Firebird Band. They most recently reunited in 2011 put out a new EP; the songs may have changed but the anxiety remains (mostly) the same. With Owen, Laura Stevenson and the Cans, and Aficionado.
