More About

Appearing as a guest choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance might have been the closest he has come to mainstream appreciation, but in the world of movement, Desmond Richardson is a household, or studio-hold, name. Mentored by Alvin Ailey and now hailed as one of the great modern dancers of our time, he’s the veritable Baryshnikov of contemporary ballet. Along with choreographer Dwight Rhoden, this Queens native founded Complexions in 1994, the original decidedly diverse company. Tonight, the troupe of young, beautiful, sometimes American Apparel–ed dancers adopts pieces that combine a variety of styles, genres, and time periods. And with up-tempo pop-music choices—they seem to have a thing for U2—the performances are all the more accessible. You can see a complimentary showcase by the company tonight as part of Celebrate Brooklyn!, where it will perform selections from its repertory, including “Mercy,” a dance dedicated to the memory of Patrick Swayze.
