ROCK ’N’ REVOLT

The Afro-Punk festival storms Commodore Barry Park

At this year’s Afro-Punk Festival, the titular genre offers less a unified aesthetic than an open-ended and open-minded way to approach various strains of contemporary pop and underground music. Case in point: On Saturday, the festival takes the elusive Queens rap group Das Racist, places them against a DJ set from Ghe20 Goth1k’s Venus X, and then has r&b visionary Erykah Badu follow both. On Sunday, the eccentric Flatbush Zombies play their set at the park’s skate area, before Phony PPL, Reggie Watts, Toro y Moi, Janelle Monáe, and TV on the Radio close the weekend. In between acts, check out the food trucks, DIY market, custom bike show, art wall, and skateboarding competition.
Wed., Aug. 15, noon; Fri., Aug. 31, noon, 2012
