A NEW GROOVE

Yeasayer rock in the Park

Onetime critical darlings whose 2010 Odd Blood finished in the top 50 of that year’s Pazz & Jop poll, Yeasayer’s just-released Fragrant World has gone over rather less well with the indie-scene sentinels at Pitchfork (“unremarkable”) and SPIN (“unsatisfying”). Sounds like one of the year’s sweeter groove records to my ears, especially when Chris Keating takes his vocals to that warm, safe place where as a child he’d hide; “Henrietta,” for instance, could be Spandau Ballet as choreographed by Teddy Riley. Expect the Brooklyn bros to greet a sympathetic audience tonight, their final U.S. gig before heading to Europe.
