PRINT MATTERS

Why you should buy a lit magazine today

When Lorin Stein took over the Paris Review in 2010 (as its third editor in 57 years), he immediately addressed the elephant in the room: Was running a literary magazine in the 21st century still a worthy pursuit? In his first editor’s note, he wrote: “The real question is not whether journals can survive in some imagined future, but what we ourselves want and need. And when have we needed a great print journal more? Most of us spend our days in an enforced state of distraction, with nothing allowed to sink in.” Hear, hear! Tonight, Stein will continue this argument at the panel discussion “Who Gives a Sh*t About Literary Magazines”? Joining him will be Rob Spillman, editor of Tin House; John Freeman, editor of Granta; and Randy Rosenthal, editor of The Coffin Factory.
