More About

Trailblazers for many a modern-day Hannah Montana, the Monkees were originally actors cast to play a fictional band in a kids’ show airing alongside Saturday morning cartoons. But by the time they released Head in 1968—their one and only feature film venture—they were topping charts as successful musicians. And certainly not for kids. This stream-of-consciousness acid trip of a movie was directed by then-aspiring filmmaker Bob Rafelson and co-written by a young Jack Nicholson. Truly a plotless wonder, Head’s series of vignettes are linked together only by the duo’s apocalyptic humor. Supposedly about conceptual reality and the nature of free will, we’ll play it on the safe side and just say that this film has one great original soundtrack. See it tonight followed by a panel featuring Kurt Loder, Rob Sheffield, Julie Klausner, and more.
