More About

Three decades ago (give or take), the Hernandez brothers launched Love and Rockets, a self-published comic book combining sci-fi, cheesecake, and punk rock with achingly poignant characters. The adventures of Gilbert’s heroine, the beautiful (if fetishistically top-heavy) Luba, blend folk-tale charm with corporeal pathos, while in Jaime’s stories, So-Cal Latinas—some ecstatically beautiful, others painfully plain, all baroquely emotional—spar with feckless boyfriends or swoon over masked wrestlers of both sexes. Whether creating street-level dramatics or magic-realist nightmares, Los Bros draw like a dream, and tonight they celebrate the big 3–Oh with a return to their punk roots, signing copies of Love & Rockets: New Stories #5 at Brooklyn’s Rock Shop (7:30 p.m.); on Sunday, they join panel discussions at the Brooklyn Book Festival (2 p.m.). Friday at 7:30, the Rock Shop, 249 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-230-5740, therockshopny.com, $5; Sunday at 2, Saint Francis Auditorium, 180 Remsen Street, Brooklyn, brooklynbookfestival.org, free
Fri., Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m., 2012
