More About

Who says adults can’t play with toys? For his exhibition Dark Peculiar Toys: The Mechanics of Joy, Viktor Koen, who works with mixed media, photography, and digital montage, photographed toys and objects that he had collected over the years—some from his childhood, some from his travels—and then mixed and matched their parts to create new, creepy dolls. One doll has its decapitated head attached to an airplane while another has grown a spiky silver tail. Says Koen in his artist’s statement: “These creations come at odds with their carefully planned origins and brake gender and age molds by defying children’s experts, focus groups, and sales projections.” Sorry, Barbie and G.I. Joe, Koen’s toys are cooler. Artist reception from 6 to 9.
Thu., Oct. 4, 6-9 p.m.; Mondays-Fridays, 12-6 p.m. Starts: Oct. 4. Continues through Oct. 28, 2012
