More About

New York–based artist Mickalene Thomas says her work is heavily inspired by her 1970s childhood and the blaxploitation films of the era, and indeed, her portraits of African-American beauties with a retro vibe look as though they might be channeling Foxy Brown. Undeniably cool, Thomas’s work most recently grabbed the attention of singer and fashionista Solange Knowles, who featured her work in the new music video “Losing You.” Now you can see her vibrant paintings, collages, and installations in her first solo museum exhibition, Origin of the Universe. Can you dig it?
Mondays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: Oct. 19. Continues through Jan. 20, 2012
