More About

Following the New York Philharmonic’s performance of Gruppen for three orchestras in July, and August’s Birmingham, England, rendition of his sky-high Helicopter String Quartet, our year of Karlheinz Stockhausen spectacles continues apace with two works from each of the flabbergasting German composer’s final epic operas. Percussionist Stuart Gerber will perform Heaven’s Door—written to show that “Heaven is not all ice cream”—on a custom-made 700-pound door with a dozen hanging panels. Part of Stockhausen’s unfinished 24-hour opera cycle Light, Door will be accompanied by the eight-track, techno-influenced surround-sound piece Cosmic Pulse. During its arrival and departure, moreover, the audience will be bathed in pre-Halloween orange light for the soundscapes Friday Greeting and Friday Farewell from Stockhausen’s seven-opera Sound cycle. Should be spectacular.
