More About

Today, Times Square is known to locals as a tourist trap best to be avoided. But that wasn’t always the case. Joe McKendry, a painter and illustrator whose work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, and the Voice, among others, has published a beautiful new book on the history of the city’s famous intersection. In One Times Square: A Century of Change at the Crossroads of the World, McKendry offers his historically accurate illustrations of the area’s evolution, from its humble beginning as a dirt path known as Bloomingdale Road (how quaint!) to the construction of The New York Times’ headquarters in 1904 to the Disney-fied playland that it is today. Tonight, he’ll discuss the book with a panel including Lynne Sagalyn, Earle W. Kazis and Benjamin Schore professor of Real Estate at Columbia Business School, and Tim Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance. An exhibit of his illustrations will also be on display.
Wed., Oct. 24, 5:30 p.m., 2012
