Goodbye, Affirmative Action?

A Supreme Court case has colleges considering how to stay diverse if race-based admissions is axed

Eliminating affirmative action forces universities to be more resourceful in getting the students they want. In fact, a few of the universities Kahlenberg studied—UC, Texas A&M, and the University of Georgia—discontinued legacy preferences along with racial preferences. Kahlenberg says that was a positive effect of the ban on race-conscious admissions and that more universities should do the same.

Still, the most qualified minority candidates admitted to the top schools via affirmative action would be most impacted.

If affirmative action is struck down, Orfield worries, and class-based affirmative action becomes the rule, it will be these middle- and upper-class students admitted to top universities under the policy who will lose.

I'm usually a flaming liberal when it comes to social issues, but I'll be happy to see affirmative action go. I'd love to see the top 10% rule get repealed in Texas too. A kid from the top 10% from the RGV is less likely to utilize what UTexas has to offer than someone from The Woodlands. Admission should be based on merit with preference going to outstanding students with economic needs. http://www.protopage.com/cuban-cigars http://www.protopage.com/cohiba-cigars http://www.protopage.com/partagas-cigars http://www.protopage.com/davidoff-cigars

Affirmative action shouldn't be taken away. It does need to be revised. As a white woman, I have been discriminated against my whole adult life. By color, race, size, etc. It's not doing the job it was supposed to anymore. The past 40 years, I know many people who are receiving reverse discrimination. As a woman with 2 degrees in accounting, I lost my job nearly 10 years ago and have been denied work. No, I'm not on welfare. I am medically retired. The business industry needs to hire people who received degrees for the field they've studied in and be hired. Companies need to stop hiring people to meet quotas and based on race, religion, etc. The government needs to fix affirmative action or abolish it because its not working.

I understand why some people take issue with Affirmative Action, but I also can't think of a better way to equalize the past and present racial inequities that plague our country. Also, It's a fact that Affirmative Action has benefited White women more than non-Whites. THink of it this way, for the few Black people who get an extra boost or two from AA, there are countless White people esp. men who receive a lifetime of boosts (lower mortgage interest rates, more likely to receive job call-back, promotion, higher salary, and even better medical treatment). These are well documented facts. So don't worry guys, Blacks may get a cookie crumb boost, but you still have 99% of the pie. You can afford share a crumb esp. considering the boost that Slavery and Jim Crow laws gave Whites.

Affirmative action benefited many different groups, but not Black Americans. In the nineteen seventies, many colleges and universities recruited black students they knew would fail. This was done to boost admission numbers. Pathways around affirmative action included: placing coded words on job applications, hiring the least qualified black and dumping the qualified ones intentionally, substituting women as minorities, and many other cloaking devices. This is why black people have made few gains in the STEM fields. Institutional racism involved putting “happy negroes” on college tenure boards to block qualified African Americans. Add to these practices 400 years of racism and the race-based distribution of wealth in America. The list goes on, but I have news for you people. Now that we are in the White House, which we built, the last is truly first in 2012. This country will not get another chance to go back to Jim Crow. Why do I say this? It is because this time God will not let you!

It's funny that the word "minority" and "people of color" don't include Asians...cuz we all know that Asians aren't minorities, were sponsored by your local KKK chapter, and didn't built the railroads of the West under slavery....

How about we start admitting kids to colleges based on ability, grades, etc, hiring them for jobs they qualify for and are willing to train for, and rewarding them for production rather than skin color. It does go both ways and I don't think Affirmative Action was meant to create a sort of reverse discrimination anymore than it was meant to reward a person of color just because of that. We need less laws and more compassion and common sense in this world and when a law is set down to be so restrictive it prohibits intelligent people from making right decisions.

In socialist Toronto Canada they have black only schools on a volunteered basis, kind of like optional racism. When blacks and KKK are happy about the same thing, something is very wrong.

Affirmative action was born of a childish liberal envy of others whose only crime was having more of something than others have.

Affirmative action is a cancer on Human values and entrenches racism forever in our laws. Nice work girls.

The more non-Californians admitted to public University of California the fewer in-state can be. Fall admit rate for residents drops to record low 18%: 43 percent jump in the number of affluent foreign and affluent out-of-state admissions.

Cal. Chancellor Birgeneau ($450.000), Provost Breslauer ($306,000) shed thousands of eligible in-state applicants. Residents replaced by a $50,600 payment from born abroad affluent foreign, affluent out of state students. And, Birgeneau Breslauer subsidize affluent foreign and affluent out of state tuition in the guise of diversity while they double in-state tuition (Harvard College now less costly).

Birgeneau Breslauer hapless leadership accepts $50,600 tuition to displace California residents (When depreciation of tax funded assets, infrastructure, cost of bonds etc, are included (as they should be), out of state, foreign tuition is more than $100,000 and does NOT subsidize in-state tuition.

With the influence of University of California Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau Provost George Breslauer deployed excessive force by his campus police - rammed baton jabs - on students protesting Chancellor’s Provost’s doubling of in-state tuition. Retire dysfunctional Provost Breslauer. Birgeneau resigned.

I was a teacher. My principal was Black. I see no reason for her children to get an undeserved leg up over my children or grandchildren.

If middle class and upper class minorities can't compete after 50 years of affirmative action  shame on them.

@Richard1980 I agree in principle but how do you decide  what is merit. The 10percent rule is fair because it is fair. Get excellent grades and your in.  You have to go to public school and compete with the smelly masses.

The crimes were committed before having "MORE". That's how much of the "MORE"was attained.

The real cancer on DECENT human values comes from those who think that having "MORE" is the ultimate human value.

 stupid post you ever heard of jim crow?.you do not even know the history of your own country.and unlike slavery the victims of jim crow are still living plus a lot of the folks who enforced and benefitted from jim crow..do not say my ancestors did not have slaves ,they did not march with MLK jr either  they went along with the state sanctioned subjugation of black americans with glee

 @honest Are you equally outrage by the leg up that all Whites receive on the basis of being White over non-Whites? The benefits are spread out over lifetime even in small daily interactions as opposed to the individualized benefits AA provides on a few occasions. The thing about privilege is that it goes unrecognized by those who receive it's benefits because it's so natural to them. That is why we have institutions including universities that have done studies to ascertain the bias that favors Whites vs others. A quick google will provide you all the factual information to support my statement.

 affirmative action definition

A term referring to various government policies that aim to increase the proportion of African-Americans, women, and other minorities in jobs and educational institutions historically dominated by white men. The policies usually require employers and institutions to set goals for hiring or admitting minorities.

Note : Affirmative action has been extremely controversial. Supporters maintain that it is the only way to overcome the effects of past discrimination and promote integration. Critics dismiss it as “reverse discrimination,” denying opportunities to qualified whites and men. ( See Bakke decision ).

 @honest That's right on! Enough already, let's get off the race issue and start treating each other like equals.

Blacks are better at somethings, Why can't Whites be better at other things?

Sanders have you ever heard of Serfdom.? It was a form of slavery that existed in Europe for a 1,000 years or more. The last of the serfs were freed in the Russian Empire in 1860, 4 years before  te emancipation proclamation.

Do you want to give affirmative action points to people with Slavic names? By the way slavic has its roots in the word slave.

 Has discrimination left us?  Are women given equal opportunities (All the time)?  When was the last time you seen someone other than a Romney or and Obama run for President?  What are the key words: historically, dominated, white men.

 @msanders8718

Could be I ..I'm 65 now. When I was 15 50 years ago I had a Black Math teacher name . She knew her stuff.

To be a NYC High School teacher they had to pass a very tough competitive Civil Service test that gave no free points to anyone.

Now a days lack people in high position are suspect because of Affirmative action.

So how do we know the HR manager is straight up Maybe he's prejudiced.. I also happen to know FD people. I taught their kids who out classed just about everyone in the school.

The FD people are the smartest non university trained people I know. Do you think you could beat them in a fair contest.

Make a physical/mental test. Top people get the job.

 logic he does not have a clue about jim crow and the long term financial effects it had that affect blacks today.there is no such thing as old money for blacks unless these entertainers of today do the right thing and look out for their descendents.whites have old money blacks do not because of jim crow

 @honest

 honest you simply do not have a clue.how do you know they were less qualified? please do not play the brand name school mess.my freind is HR mgr at UPS he says he fires folks from big name colleges everyday.did you see their resumes? how do you know they are less qualified.affrimative action came because jim crow.it is still here because there are too many. folks who willl do jim crow mess today if you give them a inch,sorry i have worked with them.look at NYFD where it is nothing but a good old boys club.if i pass the test when i get to my assignment i got some sorry cat trying to get me ran off the job,so he can get his folks in.all those millions of minorites in NYC and look at the makeup of NYPD and NYFD

 @honest  The intent, nature and severity of Jim Crow laws were different than how poor Whites were treated. It had long reaching effects including financially and socially disenfranchising Black individuals, communities and most importantly families. I invite you to do your research. In addition the predication of these laws on skincolor rather than culture/ethnicity or class made the impact even greater because you can't hide or change your color. Not only did the several decades following slavery economically disenfranchise Blacks but there followed policies to exacerbated that including the Rockefeller drug laws . Combine all that with the internalized effects of racism hence colorism, self hate, the fear of "acting white" (which is really just a way of validating White ppl as the smart wealthy ones), etc..

LogicFirst
LogicFirst

 @honest  Do you have any empirical evidence to support your assertion that Affirmative Action has the same effect on Whites as Jim Crow laws did on Blacks? Since you were a teacher you probably have great respects for facts. An interesting fact is that Affirmative Action has been almost most beneficial to White Women. Not Black women, not Black men, but White women. That doesn't sound like Jim Crow to me. I'm assuming you are familiar with what Jim Crow laws actually entailed and their effects.

honest
honest

 @msanders8718

I was in the NYC school system and many less qualified Blacks were promoted over better qualified White candidates.

That' is what affirmative action is and it needs to stop.

Jim crow laws were government actions designed to hold Blacks back.

Affirmative action laws have the same effect on Whites.

NYC where I lived had no Jim Crow laws so why should it have had affirmative action.especially since it never had to redress Jim Crow laws in its past..

msanders8718

 @honest

 you are correct to a certain degree because if you drop out of school today you are a fool.affrimative action helped the smart aggressive folks who played the game the way  "the man" said you should but was still getting froze out of jobs they were qualified for.see a lot of folks talk that mess but do not really want to see poor folks 'pull themselves up by their bootstraps" because that means more folks chasing good jobs plus .I have been in aviation 30 years and saw folks try to promote lesser qualified folks over better qualified blacks for race reasons . crazy stuff like promote hs grad over blacks with masters degrees. you know if the shoe was on the other foot, nobody would promote a black hs grad over anybody with a masters degree.and if the laws were not in place we would go back to jim crow in on a lot of jobs.also they are not going to the projects grabbing poor unquailfied blacks putting them in good jobs the black unemployment rate would be lower than what it is.

 @msanders8718

So What. .Those barriers no longer exist.

Until the French revolution white working people were treated like Blacks all over Europe. That was 60 years before Lincoln.

The last serfs were freed  when 20 million of them were freed in the Russian Empire in 1860 the year Lincoln took office.

All of these folks faced  discrimination similar to the Jim Crow laws.

The only thing that holds people now their own weaknesses

50 years is long enough

 @leybadoris I have two daughters that are raising children as we speak. They are not climbing any ladders right now and  that is a matter of choice. Statistically this will show up as an under achieving women, but it isn't.
