The problem with debt? It has lost its glamour. Once the domain of the smoky backroom gambling circle, any street cred evaporated now that massive, incomprehensible, decades-in-the-works debt is basically a rite of passage. If you went to any kind of college, ever got any kind of sick, or are reading this free paper/free website right now, chances are you know what we’re talking about. That’s why we recommend The People’s Bailout, a variety show and telethon to benefit the 99 percent. The night of performances will feature comedian Janeane Garofalo and former Daily Show head writer Lizz Winstead, as well as members of Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel (yes, Jeff Mangum!), Fugazi, and TV on the Radio, among others. The best part is that proceeds will go toward launching the Rolling Jubilee, a new project by Strike Debt that will buy people’s debt for pennies on the dollar and cancel it like magic—like really awesome magic.
