Does Santa really exist? For thousands of New York City good boys and girls, between 1913 and 1928, he certainly seemed to thanks to John Duvall Gluck Jr., a big-hearted publicist and Christmas enthusiast whose goal was to respond to all the North Pole-bound letters that ended up in the post office’s dead-letter office. With the help of donors and movie stars, such as Mary Pickford and John Barrymore, his project known as the Santa Claus Association answered requests for everything from dolls and Boy Scout uniforms to warm food for starving siblings and, in one case, an artificial limb. Now at City Reliquary, you can return to those simpler times with this collection of artifacts, gathered by Gluck’s great-grandnephew, including original Santa letters, photos, and scrapbooks.
