More About

It’s easy to forget that “Auld Lang Syne” was first a poem, written by Robert Burns in 1788, before it became the song that rang out annually over a Times Square packed with Nivea-sponsored balloons and one really psychotropic disco ball. But we’ve heard enough of that one. This year, get some new material at two all-day poetry readings. The Poetry Project’s 39th Annual New Year’s Day benefit will feature more than 100 performers, including genre vets like John Giorno, Anne Waldman, and Bob Holman, alongside readers hailing from other disciplines like film (Jonas Mekas), rock (Lenny Kaye), and dance (Yvonne Meier). Food from Two Boots Pizza, Veselka, S’MAC, and others, as well as beer donated by Brooklyn Brewery should keep you sustained for a while.
Tue., Jan. 1, 2 p.m., 2013
