Chicken and Mushroom Dumplings from Just Sweet Dessert House (83 Third Avenue, 212-388-1380)
Now, Just Sweet Dessert House does not look like anything special — in fact, it looks like the kind of place where you’d get over-sweet, powder-based boba that only offers finger foods to prevent diners from developing sugar-shock.
When Year of the Takeout walked past the establishment, however, we noticed Chinese takeout-style dumplings were served and felt like giving them a try.
A few different varieties are available, but YotT eventually settled on the $4.50 chicken and mushroom.
The app, prepped entirely in-house, had an earthier, more nuanced taste than the run-of-the-mill pork variety often encountered at takeout eateries. The dough, skillfully shaped and boiled just the right amount of time, achieved an excellent middle ground between chewiness and softness. YotT highly recommends this plate.
