DANCE REVOLUTION

When East meets Italy

Film great Michelangelo Antonioni can be associated with many locales: the dreamy Mediterranean of L’Avventura or the intrusively mod London of Blow-Up. China, on the other hand, usually isn’t one of them, even though his little-known documentary Chung Kuo, Cina is every bit as scandalous. Invited by a certain Chairman Mao to tour New China in 1972, the director chose to focus on the unembellished lives of workers, earning him swift accusations of being “anti-Chinese.” Tonight, choreographer Yin Mei will reclaim the film in DIS/ORIENTED: Antonioni in China. Her multimedia dance piece combines images and spoken word from the film with live performance and narration taken from her childhood diaries. Composer Bora Yoon will provide a live score, and Fei Bo of the Chinese national ballet will dance alongside Mei.
