Although born in Sudan, Sinkane—known outside the music world as Ahmed Gallab—came of age going to punk shows in Columbus, Ohio. Today, he makes music that stretches between funk and jazz, singing reverberating vocals over understated production that recalls the best of chillwave. This year, the man who has contributed to projects by Eleanor Friedberger, Yeasayer, Caribou, and Of Montreal is touring with Toro y Moi, and I’d be surprised if he weren’t jamming to his Underneath the Pine while recording last year’s Mars.
