These days the balance between in and out is exemplified by the master saxophonist, and this particular band of his, a duel-drummer quintet that isn’t happy unless some sort of zig-zag is taking place. Rhythms shift, horns are switched, expressionistic levels are constantly recalibrated. Swing and groove are always in the air, unless they duck outside for a smoke. Best of all, Lovano’s earthy bluster is right up front, leading the charge and putting a solid vision in place. He knows where he’s going, even when he doesn’t.
