Sure, plenty of women get cold feet on their wedding day. But our heroine could be forgiven for some severe frostbite: It seems that her father has decided to marry her to the devil . . . but not before chopping off her hands. Sound just too Grimm? Well, in the hands of Kneehigh Theatre, The Wild Bride should prove more rollicking than dour. This British company, led by Emma Rice, offers playful and sophisticated storytelling, often with a feminist spin. Whether taking on a classic weepie or a violent fairy tale, they find unexpected poignancy, humor, and fantasy. You might take care bringing young children (the
runaway bride’s woodland companions are in for some violence, too), but a Kneehigh show almost certainly guarantees a happily ever after.
