“All art is autobiographical,” said Fellini. “The pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” Yet some pearls are more autobiographical than others. Tonight at the Housing Works Bookstore Café, comics historian Christopher Irving (Leaping Tall Buildings) moderates a conversation about exactly what it takes to put one’s life onto the pearl of a comics page, with four autobiographical cartoonists: Dean Haspiel (Billy Dogma), Bob Fingerman (Minimum Wage), Laura Lee Gulledge (Page by Paige), and Ethan Young (Tails). Expect a frank discussion of the hazards of honesty, the nuts and bolts of autobio cartooning, and the rewards of knowing when, and how, to draw the line.
