Every serious revolutionary has pretty much the same checklist to maintain—the loyalty of the people, a judicious manifesto, and bitchin’ swag. For Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau, it’s that last one that gets countries won. In Louis Malle’s 1965 comedy Viva Maria!, the dainty duo play socialist revolutionaries who attempt to overthrow a small South American country with the proven insurgency tactics of striptease and can-can dancing—as well as a lot of really big machine guns. One of more than a dozen films costumed by Italian-born French designer Pierre Cardin, it features Bardot and Moreau decked out in outfits ranging from ultra-feminine tiered skirts and elaborate hats to fitted collared shirts with masculine mini ties. Even Bardot in a tattered dress still looks glamorous as she dodges bullets. See it tonight as part of the series “The Man Makes the Clothes: Pierre Cardin in Film,” screening Tuesdays this month.
