Though bibliophiles are known for preferring wintry stay-at-home-and-read weather, the spring marks one event they’re excited for: the return of the PEN World Voices Festival. It’s an entire week of readings, panel discussions, and parties all over town with a range of authors from around the world. It opens tonight at Cooper Union (7 East 7th Street) with readings on the theme of bravery from Native American author Joy Harjo, Jamaica Kincaid, and Earl Lovelace, among others. Highlights from the week include An Evening with McSweeney’s at Joe’s Pub (April 30), a tea party/workshop with illustrator Maira Kalman (May 1), former Harper’s editor and devoted Parliaments fan Lewis Lapham on the topic of smoking (May 1), a talk with Fran Lebowitz and A.M. Homes (May 3), a workshop on myths and magic with Téa Obreht (May 3), and a lecture from Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor (May 5). Through May 5, vist worldvoices.pen.org for more information.
Mondays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: April 29. Continues through May 5, 2013
