Since the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness were won by different horses, we already know there won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year. But we think this makes going out for the Belmont Stakes more fun for the casual fan. The one-and-a-half mile track is the longest—and thus the most demanding—of the thoroughbred courses, and the park, which opened in 1905, is steeped in history (Ruffian, who died overexerting herself in a famous 1975 race, is laid to rest in the infield with her nose pointed to the finish line). Even if you know nothing about the “Sport of Kings,” going to Belmont Park is fun and relaxing. The 460-acre grounds are lovely, and the restaurants are better than you would expect. You can also bring in a picnic and a cooler, but check the guidelines. And prepare to look refined: There is a dress code to preserve the genteel atmosphere. Post time 6:40 (plus four other graded races starting at 1),
