The mermaids are back on Coney Island

Organizers of the Mermaid Parade put out a call for help last month when it seemed that the nation’s largest art parade would not go on due to the high cost of Hurricane Sandy damage. But through generous donations via Kickstarter, more than $100,000 was raised so that the mermaids and their friends can once again descend upon Coney Island. More than 150,000 New York City artists are scheduled to showcase colorful (and barely-there) costumes, motorized floats, antique cars, and moving art pieces. Last year’s crowd reached a record 750,000 spectators and, this year, even larger numbers are expected. King Neptune Judah Friedlander and Queen Mermaid Carole Radziwill reign over the event, which runs rain or shine—because, after all, what mermaid is afraid to get wet?
