SONIC GLOOM

Jewish metal bands
hit Littlefield

Inspired sonic juxtapositions and an interest in Jewish roots music beyond klezmer link Deveykus, Les Rhinocéros, and Pitom, three remarkably diverse bands who’ve found a home on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. Philadelphia quintet Deveykus’s astonishing new Pillar Without Mercy is a heavy metal album in both senses of the term. On it, bandleader Dan Blacksberg blends massed horns and doom-laden electric guitars to evoke a spiritual “cleaving” of secular and sacred forms, with transcendent results. Balancing Deveykus’s darkness with nimble wit, the second album by Washington, D.C., power trio Les Rhinocéros revives the ADHD jump-cut aesthetic of Zorn’s late-’80s downtown supergroup Naked City. And Yoshie Fruchter’s Pitom quartet evokes Frank Zappa and the Mahavishnu orchestra with wild violin-guitar excursions that explore notions of blasphemy, atonement, and surf-freylekh release.
