Afloat in space with the help of a stage-roaming boom, space-suited trumpet virtuoso Michael Blaauw circumnavigates the globe in the title role of Michaels Reise um die Erde (“Michael’s Journey Around the World”). The second act of Donnerstag, the “Thursday” segment of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s seven-day, 29-hour opera cycle, “Michaels Reise” is essentially an extended trumpet concerto, performed by Ensemble musikFabrik, wherein the composer blends “world music” with that of the spheres amid a cosmic confrontation of primal forces. Mocked by a pair of clownish clarinets, Blaauw is eventually “crucified” by Lucifer’s infernal trombones and basses. He ultimately ascends to the firmament in sweet, trilling ecstasy with the lady Eve and her foxy basset horn in a finale that, like the rest, is lyrical, challenging, and otherworldly. In honor of Stockhausen’s vision, audience members are encouraged to wear bright blue clothing.
