In James Franco’s new book, A California Childhood, we see him not as the weed-loving A-lister and renaissance man he is today, but rather an adorable adolescent growing up in the well-to-do suburbs of Palo Alto, “the living grounds for all the dukes of Silicon Valley,” he writes. Through personal photographs (including priceless family portraits), art renderings, poems, and stories, Franco plays with the concept of memoir and aims to show that life in his perfect neighborhood wasn’t as sunny as it seemed. Tonight, he discusses the book with legendary poet and academic Frank Bidart at the Strand.
