Despite the devastation Hurricane Sandy wrought in the Rockaways last fall, the beaches have come back strong. Now, thanks to Creative Time, so will a group of 10 artists as they compete head to head and turret to turret in the second annual Artist Sandcastle Competition. The artists and their teams will have just three hours to build super-size sand structures and best their competition. Waris Ahluwalia and last year’s winners, Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw, are just a few of the judges who will be scoring the works by David Brooks, Sebastian Errazuriz, and Rachel Owens, among others. After the judging, spectators and artists alike are encouraged to move to the boardwalk for a barbecue and dance party at nearby classic beach eatery Rippers. Local food vendors, such as The Big Banana, DiCosmo’s Italian Ice, and Rockaway Taco, will also be on site the entire day.
