Could Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man be one of the great buddy movies? For a couple of snarling monsters, these guys work well together. Three years after the original film The Wolf Man—and a great many more after Mary Shelley’s novel—Universal Studios produced director Roy William Neill’s 1943 sequel/mash-up. Here, Lon Chaney Jr.’s lycanthropic and distressed Larry Talbot encounters mute, lumbering Bela Lugosi as Dr. Frankenstein’s abandoned creation in his quest for a cure. They make a great investigative team as they search for the deceased scientist’s notes, only to be torn apart over—what else?—a girl. The doctor’s buxom daughter (Ilona Massey), to be exact. See the classic tonight as part of the “John Zorn Selects” series, which spotlights films with exemplary scores as chosen by the composer.
