SMOG CHECK

Bill Callahan tries to explain himself

As one of indie rock and alt-country’s most enigmatic and downright recalcitrant figures, Bill Callahan has always left his fans wanting more. Whether working under the moniker (Smog) (with or without parentheses) or his given name, he has always recorded songs that, through characters, seemed to give glimpses of who he is. A recent documentary, Apocalypse: A Bill Callahan Tour Film, which BAM is screening tonight, attempts to illuminate some of his personality. What the documentarian found, judging from the film’s dearth of insightful interviews, was that Callahan’s music was his personality. His fans may learn that the hard way tonight, when Callahan, who recently put out a critically acclaimed new album titled Dream River, makes an appearance after the movie. He’ll also be at Webster Hall on Sunday.
