London native Matthew Bourne has gained a reputation as the audience-conscience choreographer. It’s fitting. Even for the more attention span–challenged among us, his dance-theater productions offer an aesthetic eyeful and a cinematic swiftness where narrative is concerned. To mark the 25th anniversary season of the New Adventures company, Bourne will round off his Tchaikovsky trifecta with the tour Sleeping Beauty: A Gothic Romance, completing the series set in motion with Nutcracker! in 1992 and Swan Lake in ’95. Beauty’s stage has all the old-world grandeur that the subtitle might suggest, but really the ballet spans age and genre—from a stunning, candlelit forest brought indoors, complete with birch trees and harvest moon, to Edwardian lawn parties and a modern-day masquerade. We can’t turn down a spectacle when it’s this spectacular.
Mondays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Oct. 23. Continues through Nov. 3, 2013
