From his scandalous conical bra for Madonna to his punk-rock wedding dress for Beth Ditto to his stage costumes for Marilyn Manson, Jean Paul Gaultier has never met a rebel he didn’t want to dress. Exploring Gaultier’s diverse universe, the exhibit The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, making its only East Coast stop at the Brooklyn Museum, features 32 mannequins whose faces come to life via interactive technology. Melissa Auf der Maur of The Smashing Pumpkins, Ève Salvail (the model known for a dragon tattoo on her shaved head), and the French designer himself are just a few of the recognizable visages on display. The retrospective, which starts with Gaultier’s very first design from 1971, also includes 130 haute couture and ready-to-wear ensembles, his costumes for films such as The Fifth Element and Bad Education, and his collaborations with photographers and artists such as Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, and Herb Ritts. Be prepared for a wait to get in.
Wednesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m. Starts: Oct. 27. Continues through Feb. 23, 2013
