From Cristóbal Balenciaga to Alexander McQueen, gay designers have set the tone of fashion for centuries. A Queer History of Fashion: From the Closet to the Catwalk exhibits the work by iconic and influential LGBTQ designers in this extensive retrospective. The show is organized chronologically, beginning with the 18th century, when cross-dressing "mollies" and foppish "macaronis" created controversy, up through the present day, featuring Jean Paul Gaultier's skirts for men and underwear-as-outerwear that continue to push the boundaries of gender roles. The exhibit includes about 100 ensembles from the past 300 years by designers such as Balenciaga, McQueen, Gaultier, Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, Perry Ellis, and Halston, among others. Today and tomorrow, catch a free two-day symposium with speakers including Simon Doonan and Fran Lebowitz.
Fri., Nov. 8, 10 a.m. & noon, 2013
