Critics went hallucinogenic and nearly Lovecraft-ian trying to wrap their heads around Rhízoma, the brilliant 2011 debut album of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Where one writer suggested unspeakable horrors emerging from the depths of the slow and powerful "Streaming Arhythmia," another heard "hostility" lurking in the album's "awkwardly skewed harmonies." Thorvaldsdottir deals in extremes, whether of scale, volume, or emotion, and there's no telling what lurks beneath the surface. Her underground notes and icy crystal glimmers kick off the Miller Theater's new Composer Portrait series with an evening of four New York premieres and Rhízoma’s stunning “Hrím.” Electric harpist Zeena Parkins and percussionist David Shively are featured soloists with the risk-loving Either/Or contemporary ensemble as conducted by Richard Carrick.
