On his own, Jean-Philip Grobler, the mastermind and NYC resident behind indie-pop group St. Lucia, records ornately orchestrated mini-pop masterstrokes, coated in plucky new-wave synths and his own smooth vocals. In interviews, Grobler has talked about how important it is to him to pull off “the ’80s feel” of his songs, the bright-sounding synthetic horns and thickly thatched percussion tracks that owe a debt to legends like Madonna and Peter Gabriel. It’s an effect — best heard on tracks like the ultra-positive single “Elevate,” off his recent full-length, When the Night — that he has said is harder to pull off live than it sounds. But it’s something he’s attempting four times this week (with help from a few friends), at gigs in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
