What ever happened to the glorious film musical? You can find out by picking up Matthew Kennedy’s new book, Roadshow: The Fall of Film Musicals in the 1960s, which is being celebrated at MOMA with a program of the best musicals from the era, including Cabaret, Finian’s Rainbow, and Funny Girl. Tonight, catch Gigi (1958), director Vincente Minnelli’s movie based on Collette and considered to be the last great MGM musical. Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, and Louis Jordan star in this winner of nine Academy Awards. The film also screens on February 1 with an introduction from Kennedy.
