What is not said in the article is that back in the 70's the city made the entrance exam half written and half physical. Before that time your entrance score was totally predicated on your written mark, but in order to make it easier for blacks to pass the city then made the test half physical. And that was the test that Brenda Berkman took and failed along with 89 other woman. It was not discriminatory. And now 40 years later the city is sill in a bind as to how to structure an entrance exam.
Oh and BTW what they also do not tell you in the article is that Brenda Berkman was only 4' 11" and she have never been allowed to become a NYC firefighter!
