Edwidge Danticat spoke very little English when she emigrated from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to Brooklyn, at age 12. Her primary comfort in a strange country? Books, of course. By 25, the writer and memoirist had published her debut novel, Breath, Eyes, Memory (Soho Press), and attracted the attention of no less a literary giant than Oprah, kickstarting a career recognized by a MacArthur “genius” grant among a slew of other awards. Needless to say, us bookish folks are excited she’s the guest speaker at Greenlight Bookstore and LIU Brooklyn’s “Starting from Paumanok” lecture series. Tonight, Danticat reads from her body of work, takes questions, and signs books.
