Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog

With his post-everything power trio Ceramic Dog, the downtown scene's most versatile classically trained shredder champions an intellectualized brand of rock that straddles primal scream and no wave feedback. Part Robert Quine, part Blind Willie Johnson, Ribot's shambolic ax-wielding meets anti-establishment lyrics and spectral vocalizations. Last year's Your Turn takes on web piracy, poet James Oppenheim's suffragist anthem "Bread and Roses," and a folk-inflected shuffle inspired by the civil rights spiritual "Ain't Gonna Let Them Turn Us 'Round." Ribot also tackles Dave Brubeck's ubiquitous subway busker standard "Take Five" in a delightfully anarchic cover that restores the original's polyrhythmic shock and experimental spirit.
