Cecily McMillan Faces Up to Seven Years for Assaulting a Cop at Occupy Wall Street. Where's the Justice in That?
Zach D. Roberts
Police remove Cecily McMillan from a bus they’d commandeered for prisoner transport at Zuccotti Park on the night of St. Patrick’s Day 2012.

On a chaotic March night two years ago, in the midst of one of Occupy Wall Street's last large-scale demonstrations, a police officer did or did not grab Cecily McMillan's breast. Two years later, in a much-discussed, hotly-contested trial that centered around a blurry five-second YouTube clip, McMillan has been found guilty of assault on a police officer. But has justice been served?

McMillan says she was at a six-month anniversary celebration at Zuccotti Park for only a few moments, intending to find a friend in the crowd and get out. But while she was there, the NYPD began clearing the park of demonstrators. Chaos reigned. McMillan says her only clear memories from the night are being grabbed from behind by her right breast, then flung forward on her face. Her next clear memory is from hours later, when she awoke handcuffed to a hospital bed and was told she was under arrest.

NYPD officer Grantley Bovell remembers the night differently. He says McMillan deliberately elbowed him in the eye while shouting at someone in the crowd, "Are you filming this?" He saw stars, suffered a black eye, and missed two weeks of work.

Far from clarifying the events of that night, the trial only served to obscure them further. The guilty verdict has inflamed the city's progressive activists, who say it's the work of a heavy-handed DA and a biased judge. But the prosecution in her case argued McMillan was drunk, violent, and got the trial she deserved. Who's right?

We don't care if anyone grabs a man's breast, why do we care if someone grabs a woman's breast?

Seven years is insane.  The most anyone should be sentenced to is one year.

I'm glad I stayed away from those occupy protests.

They're some of the biggest play actors.   You can see in the video that she crouched down and lunged at the cop with her elbow extended.   The cop missed two weeks of work because of the black eye, while her bruises appeared after she was charged with assault several days later.

Who the hell does this woman think she is, disturbing the peace?  They ought to ship her to some commie enclave after she serves her sentence, hopefully doing some hard labor so she loses some of that fat.

She got what she deserves. I hope the judge gives her the maximum.

cop should get a raise for having to deal with people like this loser on a daily basis.

WHERE IS THE VIDEO OF HER ASSAULT? OH YEAH, THERE ISNT ONE BECAUSE IT DIDNT HAPPEN

bet that bruise just happened to show up after she decided to come up with her "victim" story.

@mjsherwood  Oh and one more thing, as most EVEYBODY knows, bruises often do not appear until the next day after an injury. They will start off a deep purple and then fade to green as they heal as is quite readily seern in the famous photo of her bruised and battered breast.  You haven't followed this case. You do not know the facts nor seen all the videos and pictures. The jury didn't gret a chance to s them either becuase the Judge is in bed with the DA, NYPD and WAll Street.. Try not to sound too much like an idiot. Get the facts first.

@mjsherwood   There is video of how sdhe was treated. The biased judge did not allow it,   You can see some photos here http://gawker.com/here-are-new-disturbing-pictures-of-the-arrest-of-ceci-1572470447. Here is a video of the police illegally telling the group to disperse (illegal because the park is open 24 hours and this was after the camp was evicted). NYPD just randomly decided to bash heads and empty the park. THEY created the violence, not the people IN the park who were not protesting...they were celebrating. The livestreamer gets very upset and the F bombs are flying but you'll get the picture. Plus if you knew this livestramer personally as I do, you would know he NEVER gets upset  like this. I have seen him a dozen times cool under pressure. That night,  cops arrived en masse  to make trouble (though the cop who grabbed Cecily stated ON THE STAND that he didn't  "know" if other police were present. Uh? Liar?) This plainclohted cop grabbed her breast from behind and she instinctively elbowed back into his eye as ANYONE would do who was grabbed like that. She was breaking NO LAW when this happened and does not deny that she elbowed him, without knowing he was a cop or who it was who grabbed her. It was self-defense and she should never have been touched at all. There are other videos too. YOU just haven't looked.
