DANCE REVOLUTION

Shake what your mama gave you

This Saturday, if you’re passing through Tompkins Square Park, you risk getting ticketed — for not dancing. Dance Parade Inc., a nonprofit that honors dance from all cultures and time periods, hosts its eighth annual Dance Parade, a celebration of joyous physical self-expression in the park, and the Dance Police are on patrol to ensure everyone is cutting loose. The parade begins with a procession of dancers and musicians that follows dance throughout history as it makes its way downtown (think everything from hula drumming to samba to techno). Once the parade reaches the park, participants and spectators adopt any style they like, with a choice of four stages: one for performance, one family-friendly, one for teaching, and a free dance area. Dance instructors offer free lessons to the shy and uncoordinated.
