Andy Warhol’s initial image of what came to be The Chelsea Girls was a cartoon on a napkin of a divided movie screen, with a B written on one side, and a W on the other (for black and white, respectively). That doodle blossomed into a marathon art-film experience, with vignettes shot in the Hotel Chelsea portioned out onto a split screen, juxtaposing light and innocent images with darker, disturbing ones while the audio tracks only one side. Directed by Warhol and Paul Morrissey and featuring a variety of Warhol’s superstars, the 1966 film isn’t commercially available, so this is a rare chance to see it.
