OUT IN THEATERS

Catch the city’s premiere LGBT film fest

After opening with a screening of Karim Aïnouz’s Futuro Beach last Thursday, the 26th edition of NewFest, New York’s leading LGBT film festival, continues to feature a surprising amount of star power: Blackbird positions Mo’Nique (Precious) and Isaiah Washington (Blue Caprice) as the parents of a high schooler in a Southern Baptist town; Ben Whishaw (Cloud Atlas) leads Lilting, about a man striving to connect with the Chinese-Cambodian mother of his deceased lover; and Gaby Hoffmann (Crystal Fairy, Obvious Child) headlines the enticing, Rosemary’s Baby-esque Lyle. Today’s entries trade in recognizable names for exciting subject matter: Age of Consent traces the history of the London gay bar Hoist, while The Circle—winner of the Teddy Award at this year’s Berlin Film Festival—depicts a romance in post-WWII Switzerland.
